Franco-Turkish Secret Parleys Concerning an Armistice in Cilicia

and the Treaty of Sevres (May - June 1920)

Abstract

The task is set to identify the mutual impact of territorial, economic and political deals, negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919-1920, and their influence on regional Franco-Turkish diplomacy in the Mediterranean, particularly in Syria and Cilicia. The reciprocal influence of the political decision, concerning the fate of 275,000 Armenians and other Christians in Cilicia on the content of the Treaty of Sevres, referring to the existing Republic of Armenia and its future united version, were of special significance. Owing to the multifactorial analysis we had traced how the British military and diplomatic victory in the Near East coined the further French policy regarding Cilicia, the Republic of Armenia and the dual power in the Ottoman Turkey. Taking into consideration the current situation in Syria and Lebanon, this analysis of the French tactics in the context of the Anglo-French rivalry may be useful for acting specialists in Oriental Studies and diplomats, who may better comprehend contemporary political processes.
